Emergency Orthodontic Care

Rendering of a tooth on a red emergency kitWe have an interesting story for you. One of our patients was playing catch with her son. They were throwing the ball back and forth. Our patient’s young son threw the ball really hard - and hit her right in the mouth. Her two front teeth survived the ordeal, but her bottom front teeth were not so lucky. They became loose, and we had to replant them. This effort was made more difficult because our patient was wearing braces on her bottom teeth. We managed to save her teeth and her braces, but it was not an easy task. If you have braces, appliances, or other forms an orthodontic aid, you need to know what emergency orthodontic care is. Let Senestraro Family Orthodontics tell you more about emergency orthodontic care.

What Is An Orthodontic Emergency?

Emergencies can happen at any time, but you really don’t want one to happen when you are wearing orthodontics. Orthodontic emergencies don’t have to be huge ones. We think that nearly any incident that happens with the orthodontics that causes you pain or that might cause your treatment plan to be delayed is an orthodontic emergency. There are many different categories of orthodontic emergencies.

You could have a wire that is broken. When that happens, you might find it poking into your cheek and gums. You could also break a bracket, which causes the wire to come off your braces. It could also cause you pain. Loose bands can also delay your treatment time. Sometimes, when you have braces or appliances, you feel pain, or you think you have an allergic reaction to a piece of an appliance, that is an emergency. You might also misplace your headgear or need more rubber bands. All of these are important.

A Word of Warning

We think it goes without saying that if you are experiencing an emergency, you need to come and see us. Don’t try and fix your problem on your own. We want you to come in to let us take a look at your mouth when you begin to have a problem. If you wait, you may make the problem even worse. If you have had trauma to your mouth from an accident or injury - such as a baseball to the face, you need to come in and see us immediately. Of course, if the emergency is serious, such as your child swallowing a piece of an appliance, call 911.

Procedure for Getting to Emergency Orthodontic Care

If you have an emergency, give us a call, and we can get you scheduled quickly. We try and get you scheduled within 24 hours. If you are waiting, we can recommend some things for you to help with pain and discomfort while you wait to see us. In some cases, we can give you extra wax to put on a broken bracket or wire. We can also recommend pain relief, such as ice or over the counter pain relievers. When you come to see us, we will repair or replace the problem. While you are in to see us, you may want to ask questions about treatment time, and how to care for your braces or appliances. Do you have questions about your orthodontic care?
