Jaw issues can be much more problematic than most patients realize. If you suffer from jaw-related problems, we can help. Our team at Senestraro Family Orthodontics can examine and review your jaw and other symptoms. Orthognathic, or corrective jaw surgery typically addresses the intricacies of occlusion, which is the way your teeth fit together, we can help determine if surgical treatment is right for you.

There are many reasons a patient may need orthognathic surgery; the severity of the surgical process will depend on each patient. At Senestraro Family Orthodontics, we will begin with the initial evaluation and proceed as necessary per situation. For some of our patients, surgical intervention may be the best way to alleviate both mild and severe or painful symptoms related to jaw disorders.

Common Reasons for Orthognathic Surgery

We see patients with a wide variety of needs. We have found that many patients can benefit from surgery correction, especially those suffering with TMD or a malocclusion (misaligned bite). Following investigation, we may recommend jaw surgery for patients struggling with:
•  Correcting Problems with Speech: Speech can be affected due to alignment and arrangement of teeth, or problems with the palate. We can surgically correct some of these issues, or surgically begin treatment followed by orthodontic care.
•  Correcting Problems with Swallowing or Chewing: Patients can suffer from excessive tissue, inadequate tissue, and more. We will evaluate your oral cavity for visible signs that could be causing dysphagia and discuss procedures.
•  TMD and other Jaw Hinge Issues: A common problem in patients with jaw and other facial pain is the presence of an imbalance of the temporomandibular joint, this disorder, known as TMJ disorder or TMD, can range of annoyance to painful. We can evaluate and alleviate these problems.
•  Birth Defect and Abnormalities: Palate issues, tissue issues, structural issues, and more. We can look for defects and abnormalities associated with growth disorders.
•  Bruxism: Bruxism is a common, often temporary but potentially very damaging disorder. This condition is often noted as an unconscious or subconscious act of clenching or grinding your teeth. You may be able to note the signs if you are waking with pain in your teeth or jaw, headaches, or through physical examination of your teeth.
•  Restoration Following Facial Injury or Trauma: Whether the patient encountered a fall, a vehicle accident, a sports injury or an act of violence, there can be fracture, dislodging, tissue damage and more. We can review, evaluate and discuss needed treatment.
•  Sleep Apnea: Sleep Apnea is a common sleeping disorder. It occurs when the patient cannot breathe in adequate oxygen while they sleep. Often this is due to excessive soft tissue around the throat area. Many patients don’t realize that dental treatment may be the best approach in reducing the effects of sleep apnea. We can surgically restructure and help increase the airway for better breathing.
